“A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have”

Dear Evan Hansen swept the boards at the Tony Awards in 2017, scooping Best Actor in a Musical for Ben Platt, along with Best Musical, Score, Orchestrations, Book, and Featured Actress. If such a clear sweep wasn’t enough to pique our interest, tickets for the West End transfer go on sale imminently. We’ve also heard on the grapevine that the movie rights are confirmed and an adaptation is in the pipeline.

With lyrics and music from award winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, (The Greatest ShowmanLa La Land, NBC’s Smash), the chemistry between its cast and creatives is sheer perfection. A contemporary use of lighting, scenic design and space are simple but effective vehicles, and Dear Evan Hansen championed innovation in all three:

“Everywhere you look there is video; every surface of the entire playing space can be covered by content whether projection or LCDs,” says projection designer Peter Nigrini. “To successfully tell our story, social media needed to be a visceral part of the theatrical environment. After David created the physical environment, my job was to bring this virtual world to life on stage and give it the emotional power that so many teenagers clearly feel in their interactions with social media.”

upstage’s official theatre correspondent Mr Matthew Wall was lucky enough to see the show on Broadway with its original Tony Award winning star… So who will be cast to don the cast in the West End version?
